Do you know what depth can emperor penguins dive to?
This short audio drama depicts a phone call between a father and his adult daughter. They don’t talk much and don’t understand each other at all. But their conversation about a recently broadcast documentary about emperor penguins shows something more, something deeply human – a connection between two people who aren’t able to understand each other despite of that they speak the same language. Each time they try to become closer it just seemingly deepens the gap between them. They can’t simply tune themselves to the same wavelength. But they keep trying. The thing is that the emperor penguins must hold together to keep warm each member of the group.
This minimalistic play for two voices is an outcome of the seminar “Radio Directing” lead by Radim Nejedlý. The script was written by Klára Salcmanová, student of Scriptwriting and Dramaturgy for Radio and TV, and dramaturgically and pedagogically supervised by Eva Schulzová. It’s one of Klára Salcmanová’s first attempts to direct an audio drama.
“Emperors” was broadcast on the Czech Radio Brno in programme “Zelný Rynk”. It was afterwards nominated for the Student Award – Rising Star Audio within the international competition Prix Europa.
