Theatre Dramaturgy

Theatre Dramaturgy

The follow-up study deepens all three positions of dramaturgy (authorial, practical-operational and critical). You enter your studies with a proposal for a thesis annotation and a graduation project; during your studies these plans are elaborated and practically tested. An important part of this is an internship abroad or in a Czech professional theatre. In the projects, you prepare titles, concepts and adaptations of texts and, in coordination with the creative team, realize a full-length graduate production (Studio Marta or professional stage).

The MFA graduate is prepared to work as an independent dramaturg in any type of professional theatre and as an author of dramatic texts (including librettos). He/she will be employed in the professional press and cultural media (radio, television, online), in education (SŠ/VŠ – dramaturgy, history and theory of theatre) and in the management of a theatre or company (managerial roles).

The Master’s programme is primarily project-based. The internship is followed in the second semester of the first year by a joint project with the acting studios, and in the second year by the preparation of productions at Studio Marta and/or on professional stages. Students act as executive dramaturges, script writers/adapters, prepare promotional materials, lecturer introductions, discussions and other accompanying activities. Consultation with teachers is ongoing and emphasizes analytical thinking and practical implementation.

To develop dramaturgs capable of conceiving a long-term profile of the scene, co-creating dramaturgical and directorial concepts, managing and reflecting on the creative process and competently writing professional and promotional texts. The emphasis is on independence, values anchoring and the ability to communicate across professions.
