Theatre Directing

The BA in Drama Directing provides a comprehensive insight into the theory and practice of theatre production. You are introduced to the history of theatre with a focus on the development of directing from the late 19th century to the present day, and you gradually penetrate all phases of the production process – from the selection of a text and its analysis through the creation of a dramaturgical and directing concept to working with actors during rehearsals and during performances.
The course also includes the basics of dramaturgical thinking and collaboration with a dramaturg. You learn how to recognize and create the structure of a theatre work, how to perceive the rhythm of a production, the composition of the stage space and the relationship between acting, text and the visual component. Classes are taught through lectures, seminars and practical exercises.

A graduate of the Bachelor’s programme has a solid theoretical foundation and practical experience in leading an acting company and in the process of creating a production. He/she can prepare a dramaturgical and directorial concept and lead its implementation. He/she can work as a director or assistant director in studio or chamber theatres, as an assistant director in radio, television or film, or as a teacher of drama at the ZUŠ.
Thanks to his broad cultural outlook and organizational skills, he can also work as a producer or agency.

The acquired theoretical knowledge is immediately verified in practice through smaller staging projects. At the same time you learn the basics of leadership, team communication, critical thinking and the ability to reflect and present your own artistic work. You will gradually work your way up from small etudes to the realization of your own undergraduate production.

Teaching is based on practical projects that are continuously reflected by teachers. Emphasis is placed not only on the result, but above all on the process of creation, the director’s way of thinking, his decision-making and communication with the creative team.

Collaborative analyses of theatre productions, films, concerts and exhibitions also play an important role in helping students develop their ability to perceive a work of art in a broader context. Conceptual exercises and presentations of their own directorial proposals are an integral part of the teaching.

The aim of the Bachelor’s degree is to equip students with the theoretical and practical basis for directing and to develop their creative, dramaturgical and organisational skills. The study leads to an understanding of the theatrical process as a collective creation and to the creation of an independent authorial manuscript.
