Set and Costume Design

Thanks to a multidisciplinary approach, students learn a wide range of means of expression – from classical (art techniques) to digital media and 3D technologies. The theoretical basis, which develops the ability of critical reflection, analysis and independent artistic research, is an essential support for the author’s work. Emphasis is placed on individual student growth in an environment that fosters creativity, critical reflection, and the ability to conduct creative dialogue within a team.

The key specificity of the study is the intensive and continuous acquisition of practice in artistic projects across all levels of study. Students learn skills directly in the creative process – from the realisation of monodramas and undergraduate projects to drama and opera productions to documentary production and filming. The study is defined by its connection to the National Theatre Brno. The students gain experience directly in the background of professional stages in Brno – from participation in lighting and technical rehearsals, to the possibility of communication with experts in the NdB’s artistic workshops.

The aim of the study is to cultivate the creative potential of students and to form unique artistic personalities who perceive scenography and costume as a means of communication in space, time and situation. Graduates are versatile visual artists and makers who can shape contemporary culture with the courage to experiment and lead creative dialogue in artistic teams across genres – from theatre and film to site-specific projects and curating.

Graduates of the Studio of Scenography of the Faculty of Arts of the JAMU are profiled as versatile creative personalities with a high degree of adaptability to the contemporary artistic environment. They are able to craft and conceptually shape the visual form of a wide range of projects – from drama and opera theatre to film and documentary work to performances and site-specific installations. They have the ability to integrate principles of environmental ethics and sustainability into the creative process. In addition to their original work, they also find employment in curating, exhibiting and independent cultural production.
